African Braids on White Women?

I wanted to get my hair in braids....but I've read that its offending to African women, and they think it's 'their thing'. I don't want to offend anyone, and if I do, I don't mean to. I have no intention of being racist or offending any culture. Also, is it practical? I know that you can't wash your hair as much, so I was just wondering how to take care and manage braids.

And your opinion of braids on white girls?

Thanks.

As an African American woman, I for one I am not offended. Wearing braids is an ethnic hairstyle that stems from Africa and a historic foundation. It has become popular in the past recent years with EVERYONE wearing them. Of course, braids does not suit everyone but I would not say braids are exclusively for African Americans when tons of people who are not black have worn their hair braided.

I must ask you what kinds of braids are trying to get exactly? There are so many styles:

Cornrolls: D'Angelo, Alicia Keys (when she first came out)

box-braids: Milli Vanilli, Brandy (90s)

French braid: iceskater Michele Kwan

Plaits: rappers Snoop Dogg, Coolio

Another thing is I must warn you, because the texture of your hair is different, be careful about getting the braids too tight. Sometimes the braids are braided very tight and can cause several issues. Your head will hurt, the pulling of the scalp can lead to hair breakage, so be careful. It takes a long amount of time to achieve an intricate braided hairstyle anywhere from an hour up to 10 hrs sometimes. It can also be costly.

You should probably try to find a picture of the style you want, this way you cannot be too dissatisfied with the finished product.

I encourage you to learn more about different cultures and if wearing your hair braided is what you want to do, more power to you hun! It takes some boldness to wear them! :)

remember how stupid k-fed looked with braids - same thing. just go for regular hair extensions. also braids put a lot of stress on your scalp- good chance you will get bald patches.

First of all what kind of braids do you plan on getting? Cornrows, Pixie Braids, Micro Braids, Box Braids, etc.... I used to wear my hair in Cornrows back when it was real popular when J-Lo and Alicia Keys had them. I would have to get them done weekly because my hair isn't as course as African American Hair. I am Hispanic and although my hair has texture my stylist suggested adding weave into my hair to make the braids last longer. I had to sleep with a scarf or Du-rag on my head and washing them was out of the question. I tried it once and m hair looked horrible. You can use a dental water pick, but I wasn't up for that. They are fairly easy to remove so if your not happy it won't be a problem. They are rather costly to maintain though. About 40-45 dollars a week. I managed to find a really good African American Salon that only charged me $2 a braid because I was such a frequent customer. I have never met anyone that thought it was offensive, I always received lots of compliments on mine. So I suggest that you try it once and see if you like it. You'll never know they might look really cute!

Hope this helps, Good Luck!

braids that hang loose or cornrows? i think cornrows look ridiculous on white people, boy or girl, but I think long braids that aren't flat to your hair look good. they are kind of hippish. alanis morissette had them a long time ago and they looked neat.

and if they get offended over that we should get offended when they relax their hair!
